Not sure if you can do this already or not, but would like to be able to decide which machines in a shared database situation will render out clips. So if you are doing color on one machine you can still be rendering the files out for that project on another machine. We notice a huge performance hit when a machine starts to render files specifically on Red Dragon sensor files. If we could tell it not to render files on the local machine, that would solve this issue.
In the render tool there is a Stop button that stops that machine from rendering anything. Is this what you are looking for?

You also have the option to throttle rendering and favor playback using the slider in the Render tab
